CREATE UNIQUE

GRAPHIC DESIGNS

Do you want to transfer your unique graphic designs onto ceramics? Screen printing is an excellent method that allows you to create stunning patterns on your ceramic pieces. This technique involves pushing ink through a specially prepared screen with your design applied to it. Preparing a screen for printing starts with deciding whether to draw your design directly onto the screen or use the exposure technique. It's worth exploring the basics of this method through short instructional videos. They will guide you step by step on how to create your own screens and start printing your graphic designs with ease.

Transfer them

onto clay

To transfer designs onto clay using screen printing, use the special AMACO Ceramic Printing Inks or underglazes mixed with Mayco Silkscreen Medium to achieve the right paint consistency. Apply the ink through a screen using a squeegee, working on a slightly dried slab of clay. Once the ink has dried, you can shape your ceramic pieces as desired. Fire them as usual to achieve exceptional, long-lasting results. This technique allows you to create unique, detailed patterns on ceramics that are sure to impress!

GEL PRINTING PLATES

Gelli Arts gel plates, best known in graphic and mixed media techniques, are increasingly making their way into ceramic studios. Their flexible, soft surface allows for the creation of multilayered compositions and interesting textural effects. They enable fast, clean, and highly creative ways of transferring patterns and textures onto clay.

This technique works well on both leather-hard clay and bisque-fired surfaces. Color is applied to the surface of the gel plate—typically underglazes, metal oxides, or engobes are used. The pigment is spread evenly using a rubber roller, after which a chosen pattern is pressed into it—this could be a leaf, stencil, lace, paper cut-out, or even the imprint of a tool.

The prepared plate then serves as a matrix for transferring the design onto clay. You can press the entire pattern at once or just fragments of it, and it’s also possible to layer multiple prints to build rich, dimensional compositions. Gel plates make it possible to transfer both graphic lines and subtle tonal gradients, expanding the expressive possibilities in ceramic decoration.

FREESTYLE

WITH LINOCUT

You can achieve equally stunning results by creating your graphic designs using the linocut technique. This method offers complete creative freedom while avoiding complex processes. Simply carve your design into a linoleum block using a special linocut tool, then apply your chosen color of AMACO Ceramic Printing Inks or the ready-to-use ink pads from Minnesota Clay. The resulting stamp can be pressed onto both raw clay and bisque-fired ceramics, allowing you to create unique, personalized patterns. It’s a fantastic way to enhance your ceramic pieces with original graphics and intricate details!
