Dipping and Layering Oxblood is a reactive stoneware glaze that develops copper red in oxidation, turns transparent where thin and may run during firing.

DL-70 Oxblood creates a reduction-like copper-red effect in an oxidation firing. The full red develops in thicker applications, while thinner areas become transparent. Oxblood can run significantly during firing and requires a carefully controlled application.

AMACO Dipping and Layering glazes

AMACO Dipping & Layering is a range of dry dipping glazes formulated for dipping and pouring. Each bag contains a pre-measured dry blend to be mixed with distilled water. The glazes can be used on their own or layered to create complex color transitions. The palette is inspired by popular AMACO Potter’s Choice glazes. One bag yields approximately 4.7 L of prepared glaze, speeding up application and making it easier to achieve an even coat.

  • Oxblood produces a copper-red effect in oxidation and becomes transparent where the application is thin.
  • Each bag contains 4.5 kg of dry glaze. Once prepared, it yields the same volume as ten 472 ml jars of ready-mixed glaze, making it an economical option for studios that use larger quantities.
  • To prepare the glaze, pour 3.8 L of distilled water into a suitable container, gradually add the powder and mix until the glaze suspension is smooth and free of lumps. For best results, sieve the glaze through an 80-mesh screen and leave it overnight. One bag yields approximately 4.7 L of prepared glaze.
  • Apply the glaze to bisqueware by dipping for 1–3 seconds. Stir the glaze suspension thoroughly before each use.
  • The recommended firing range is 1200–1240°C.
  • A thicker application is needed to develop the red, and the glaze can run significantly, so leave an unglazed margin above the foot.
  • Wear a suitable particulate respirator while mixing, work in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing dust. We recommend firing a test tile before using each new batch and consulting the Safety Data Sheet.
