Speedball Mid-Fire glazes were developed by Nancy Sowder, a sculptor and ceramic artist whose artistic sensitivity, eye for colour and creative vision shaped the character of the entire range. They bridge functional pottery and fine art, offering a palette of nature-inspired colours. They create irregular mottling, tonal transitions and colour variation that give the surface a sense of depth and movement. This sophisticated look is similar to reduction glazes – despite firing in a standard kiln at 1200–1240°C.
Suitable for every level of experience, they deliver professional results with just three coats of a single colour. Layering different colours or Speedball Mid-Fire Flux glazes creates even more complex effects.
When applied and fired according to the manufacturer’s directions, the glazes are food safe.
Speedball Mid-Fire 6 Sampler Pack Limited Edition is a limited set of six 118 ml glazes. It allows you to explore the Speedball Mid-Fire range, experiment with the clay body and kiln you use, test the thickness and number of coats, layer several glaze colours, and combine them with Speedball Mid-Fire Flux glazes.
2103 Dragon Stone – a glossy glaze combining icy blue with cascading deep reds. A thicker application intensifies the distinctive irregular mottling, while a thinner layer gives a more transparent effect.
2136 Blue Flame – a glossy glaze in an intense electric blue with red accents. It is more transparent when thin, while a thicker layer creates a stronger, more dramatic effect.
2135 Prisma Green – a glossy, opalescent green glaze with blue and purple reflections. It becomes more transparent when thin and reveals different undertones depending on the light.
2107 Lavender Mist – a glossy glaze blending blue and purple hues. It may appear white when applied too thinly and creates surprising effects when layered with other Mid-Fire glazes.
2137 Vanilla Flux – a glossy, flowing white Flux glaze. Its high flux content helps create cascading effects and interesting combinations with other Speedball Mid-Fire glazes.
2138 Carolina Flux – a glossy, flowing light blue Flux glaze. Its high flux content helps create cascading effects and enrich layered combinations with other Mid-Fire glazes.
