Dark Star produces a dark matte surface with iridescent crystals whose sheen recalls a beetle shell. Where the application becomes thinner, the glaze may break translucent. It is highly fluid and develops its fullest effect toward the upper end of the 1200-1240°C range.
AMACO Cosmos is a range of highly fluid crystalline glazes for firing between 1200 and 1240°C. In a standard firing, they develop opalescent microcrystalline surfaces with depth, movement, and pronounced variation. No special firing schedule is required. Controlled cooling can, however, encourage more pronounced crystal development.
Brush the glazes onto clean, dry bisque-fired ware in 3-4 generous coats. AMACO recommends four coats for a fuller crystalline effect. These glazes are highly fluid, so stop application approximately 1.5 cm above the foot or use a drip tray to catch runs. To support off-gassing and reduce pinholing and blistering, leave the inside or back of the form unglazed. The final result depends on application thickness, clay body, firing temperature, and cooling cycle, so we recommend firing a test tile.
The glazes are labeled food safe. However, because of the limited durability of the fired surface, AMACO does not recommend them for food-contact surfaces. They are best suited to decorative ceramics, sculpture, tiles, and ceramic jewelry.
