At low fire, S-2711 Tahiti Grape develops a semi-opaque blue base with gray and white blooming crystals and black specks. At higher firing, the base glaze and crystals fade and melt, while the specks remain. Greater flow and surface issues may occur. Always test on your selected clay body and in your own kiln before starting a batch or a project you plan to repeat.
Mayco Jungle Gems Crystal Glazes are designed primarily for low-fire use, where their characteristic base colours and crystal effects develop. They contain pieces of glass frit - the crystals, which melt, spread and bloom during firing to create irregular bursts of colour and pattern. Many colours can also be fired at higher temperatures, but the result varies by colour: the glaze may move and flow more, crystals can soften, fade or lose definition, and the base may become glossier, more transparent, lighter, darker or shift in colour. Check the individual colour's higher-firing information and make a test piece on your selected clay body in your own kiln before starting a batch or a project you plan to repeat. For fuller coverage and a more pronounced effect at low fire, apply 2-3 even coats to bisque and stir the glaze as you work, since the crystals settle to the bottom of the jar. On the final coat, check the placement of the crystals carefully, particularly near edges and on vertical surfaces.
