Laguna Clay WC403 Speckled Buff fires to a warm, naturally speckled finish. Clear glazes or unglazed areas highlight its distinctive natural clay surface.

Laguna Clay WC403 Speckled Buff is a stoneware clay body whose character comes to life in the kiln. Dark speckles appear against the warm buff-brown fired surface, creating an earthy, rustic appearance. Even simple vessel shapes can be visually interesting without additional decoration.

Despite a small amount of sand and fine grog, Speckled Buff remains relatively smooth and has excellent throwing properties. It is suitable for mugs, cups, bowls and larger vessels, as well as handbuilding techniques such as slab building and coil building.

The distinctive speckling offers plenty of decorative possibilities. Dark spots may show through clear, translucent and some light-coloured glazes, creating varied effects. Their visibility depends on the glaze, application thickness and firing conditions. This makes the body a good choice for both functional pottery and decorative pieces that celebrate the natural clay surface.

It can be bisque fired at approximately 1000°C and then glaze fired at around 1180–1200°C. In oxidation, the body fires to a speckled buff-brown; in reduction, it develops a deeper brown tone. At a recommended final firing of approximately 1200°C, total shrinkage is 12% and water absorption is 3%.
